Congressman Announces $8.5M For Renovation Of Old Tuscaloosa National Airport Terminal
Tuscaloosa National Airport will receive $8.5 million in federal funding to design and renovate its former terminal building.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa National Airport will receive $8.5 million in federal funding to design and renovate its former terminal building, a project local leaders say will strengthen the airport’s ability to recruit new commercial air service and support long-term economic development.

The funding was secured through a congressional directed spending request by Republican Congressman Robert Aderholt and was included in the federal spending bill approved and signed into law this week by President Donald Trump.

Airport officials said the money will be used to modernize the old terminal, transforming it into a functional facility that can support air service recruitment efforts, airline operations and future growth at the airport.
City and airport officials have said in the past that improvements to airport infrastructure are critical to attracting additional airlines and expanding flight options for residents, businesses and visitors.

David Pass, chair of the Tuscaloosa National Airport Advisory Committee, told Patch that the funding represented a "huge win" for the airport as it upgrades an important gateway to the region and is mission critical for air service development.
"It's also a testament to what our community can accomplish when we unite in resolve toward a common goal," he said. "Congressman Aderholt's support and that of our entire Congressional delegation cannot be overstated. When you combine this with commitments from Elevate Tuscaloosa we have funding for a first rate facility."
Tuscaloosa National Airport Director Jeff Powell also said the investment will allow enhancement of the terminal experience now and into the future,”
“We’re grateful for continued federal support of local infrastructure that keeps our city connected and moving forward," he said. "We thank Congressman Aderholt and the Alabama congressional delegation for their support of this project and for their continued commitment to aviation infrastructure in Alabama.”
The Tuscaloosa City Council says it will soon vote on a $13 million match funded through Elevate Tuscaloosa for a total investment of $21.5 million.
The funding will then be used to update and expand the airport’s terminal, giving the airport the ability to modernize facilities, improve passenger experience.
“The City Council and I are proud to partner with Congressman Robert Aderholt and our entire congressional delegation to strengthen this vital transportation hub for our region,” Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said. “Thanks to Elevate Tuscaloosa, the airport has undergone transformative improvements over the past five years. This investment ensures we can continue building a modern, connected future for West Alabama.”
