NORTHPORT, AL — The Northport City Council has unanimously chosen to hire Tuscaloosa City Attorney Glenda Webb as its next city administrator. If she accepts the job, Webb will become the first woman to ever serve in what is arguably the most powerful staff position with the city.

"I am very appreciative of the opportunity and look forward to working with the Council, Mayor, staff and citizens to make our city even greater," Webb told Patch following the vote.

Webb was chosen out of a pool of 35 applicants that was pared down over the last few weeks to a final four. A special called meeting of the Council took place Monday evening, where the normal rules were suspended and a vote was taken, which saw Webb receive support across the board.

Mayor Bobby Herndon made filling the position in a permanent capacity one of his primary issues going into his third term and spoke with Patch after the vote:

District 3 Councilman John Hinton, who chairs the Council's Admin Committee, told Patch a quick decision was made through a special called meeting Monday after a consensus became obvious among those involved with the search that Webb was far and away the best candidate.

"I think we got together after we interviewed and everybody had their own opinions, but when we started looking at things, we all had the same opinion," he said. "That this was the right person for Northport. We all feel good about this appointment. There was no reason to wait. We were ready to move on."

Hinton then said the Council hopes to have Webb on the job in the next month or so, while City Attorney Ron Davis said the terms of her compensation have yet to be hammered out.
