"I could not leave without letting you know how the DEMS community will always have special place in my heart. These past 4 years have truly been a blessing working with each of you," she told parents in a letter at the end of June after the school year came to a close. "I thank you all for your support and trusting me with your most precious gems-your children."

A native of Northport and graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School, King earned bachelors and masters degrees from Alabama State University, before going on to earn her PhD from Auburn University.

She started her education career as a para educator in Montgomery working with autism students, before working other educator roles and eventually joining TCSS in 2014 to work at her alma mater as an assistant principal. King then secured the top job at DEMS in 2018.

King also expressed her confidence in the school system to find a capable replacement who will build on the passion shown by the entire DEMS community during her time at the helm.

"I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing families and most importantly to be impacted by the best students in Tuscaloosa County," she said. "I have and will always believe in our students and know that they can and will be great!"
