The expansion marks Barberitos' first announced entry into the Tuscaloosa market and comes as the company continues to grow across the Southeast.

It remains unclear at this time when and where the chain will set up shop in Tuscaloosa. However, the company did say it plans to have the new locations open sometime this year.

Founded in Athens, Georgia, Barberitos specializes in burritos, tacos, bowls, quesadillas and salads, along with customizable menu options.

The company currently operates 45 restaurants throughout the Southeast, including locations in Prattville and Wetumpka.

Gessert, a University of Georgia graduate who discovered the brand while attending school in Athens, said he has long been interested in bringing Barberitos to new markets.

"I fell in love with Barberitos as a student at UGA and never found anything quite like it after leaving Athens," Gessert said in a statement. "Birmingham is a city that appreciates quality food and strong hospitality, and we're excited to introduce Barberitos to a completely new market."
