Former Greensboro Standout Named GSC Defensive Player Of The Week

TUSCALOOSA, AL — University of West Alabama defensive lineman and former Greensboro High School standout Davonta Jackson was named the Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Tigers' upset win over No. 6 West Florida on Saturday.

UWA says Jackson, a junior who previously played at Hinds Community College in Mississippi, led the team with four tackles for a loss, as the Tigers recorded 12 stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Jackson capped off the win with six tackles overall, in addition to recording a sack and forcing a fumble. The Tigers ultimately held one of the top offenses in the country to six points with no touchdowns.

This marked the first time West Florida was held without a touchdown since their inaugural season in 2016.

Along with Jackson's conference honors, Cullman native and kicker Elijah Guyton earned GSC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the victory.

West Alabama will have a bye this week and will return to action on Oct. 28 against Chowan.
