Former Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back John Mangum has been selected for induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Magee, Mississippi native and former Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back John Mangum has been selected for induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2023.

As part of the latest class, he is also joined by former Southern Mississippi standout Patrick Surtain — the father of former Crimson Tide star defensive back Patrick Surtain II.

During his playing days with the Crimson Tide, Mangum played in 11 or more games in each of his four seasons from 1986-1989.
Mangum finished his Crimson Tide career with 16 interceptions and still holds the school's career record for pass break-ups with 47.

Mangum was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 6th round of the 1990 NFL Draft and would go on to play nearly a decade for the Monsters of the Midway.
Upon his retirement in 1998, Mangum had amassed 272 career tackles, five interceptions and two forced fumbles.
After giving up the game, he joined CapTrust in 1999 as a principal and financial advisor in Jackson, Mississippi. He is the father of three children — Bailey, Abbey and Jake.
SEC baseball fans will likely remember the name Jake Mangum, who was one of the most celebrated players in Mississippi State baseball history and is currently an outfielder with the New York Mets organization.
