Jake French, the owner of Harry's Bar, said as the longtime staple of the Tuscaloosa nightlife approaches its 50th anniversary next year, the intention with the remodeling wasn't to stray away from the iconic dive bar image, but to enhance it.

"The way we did the remodel, it is very Americana," he told Patch on Thursday. "They don’t make bars like this anymore. There's burned wood on the walls, a bunch of memorabilia from the past of Harry’s and the University of Alabama, and all kinds of stuff. Over the bar, there used to be a bunch of ceiling tiles, but we took all of that out. We put up a bunch of big screen TVs and it just looks a lot sharper than what it used to."

Opening night (Thursday, Sept. 23) will feature 50 cent Natural Light as its special.
