Historic Tuscaloosa's Summer Lecture Series Kicks Off This Month

Historic Tuscaloosa has announced its four-part Summer Lecture Series, which is set to begin later this month.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Historic Tuscaloosa has announced its four-part Summer Lecture Series, which is set to begin later this month.

The monthly lectures are free, with the first installment set for June 22.

Historic Tuscaloosa says each lecture will be presented from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Van deGraff Mansion on Greensboro Avenue. Light refreshments will be provided for attendees.

June 22: The 1887 Map — The first in this year's series will be offered by Robert Register, who is a longtime student of history, with particular interest in the 1887 map. Historic Tuscaloosa says Register will discuss the maps unique perspective rendering of Tuscaloosa County in 1887 and its importance today.

July 20: Old Tuscaloosa Postcards — James Barksdale, a collector with a wealth of knowledge about Tuscaloosa's past, will offer some of the stories behind old Tuscaloosa postcards.

Aug. 24: The 1926 Rose Bowl — John Allen will present the 1926 University of Alabama vs. University of Washington Rose Bowl game, which changed Alabama football forever

Sept. 28: Slavery In American Art — University of Alabama Art History Professor Rachel Stephens will discuss her latest work “HIdden in Plain Sight.” The book contrasts the two opposing views of slavery as presented through visual arts in the antebellum South and in abolitionist works.
