Smith, a Millport native and a 2012 graduate of South Lamar High School, most recently served as Holt’s defensive coordinator. During the 2025 season, Holt finished 4–6 for the second consecutive year, while Davis-Emerson Middle School advanced to the City-County championship game.

In 2024, Smith helped guide Holt to a 4–6 record, representing the school’s first four-win season since 2005.

Smith will take the place of former head coach Brian Newton, who finished 9-21 over three seasons.

The defense recorded three shutouts during Smith's tenure as defensive coordinator, with a 47-0 win over Pickens Academy in 2024 representing the program’s first shutout since 2002.

Smith said his vision for the program extends well beyond wins and losses.

“We’re going to develop young men who represent Holt the right way — on the field, in the classroom, and in the community,” Smith told Patch. “The goal is to prepare them to be great husbands, fathers, and productive workers long after football is over.”

Before coaching at Holt, Smith spent four seasons at American Christian Academy, where he served in multiple defensive roles from 2020 through 2023.

During that span, ACA won three Class 4A Region 3 championships and advanced to the AHSAA 4A South championship game in 2020.

Smith began his coaching career at Central High School in Tuscaloosa, where he coached defensive backs from 2017 to 2019. Central reached the playoffs in two of his three seasons, and Smith was later offered a defensive coordinator position.

As a player, Smith competed collegiately at Huntingdon College from 2013 to 2016, earning All-Academic honors three times and winning two conference championships.

He was a member of the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Hampshire Honor Society in 2017 and also played baseball at Wallace State Community College prior to his football career at Huntingdon.

He is married to Hollis Smith and the couple has a one-year-old child.
