Judge John England Inducted Into The Alabama Academy Of Honor

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A titan of the Alabama legal world received another well-deserved honor on Thursday.

Retired Judge John H. England Jr. was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor, which was created by the state of Alabama “to bestow honor and recognition upon living Alabamians for their outstanding accomplishments and service.”

He joins the likes of past inductees such as Alabama football coach Nick Saban, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby and former University of Alabama President Robert E. Witt.

"What an amazing honor for a great man," said his son, State Rep. Chris England on Twitter Thursday. "So grateful that the Alabama Academy of Honor chose to recognize him and include him with so many other outstanding individuals."

Judge England first began practicing law in Tuscaloosa in 1974 and would serve two terms on the Tuscaloosa City Council before being appointed by Gov. Jim Folsom to the Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court in June 1993. He was subsequently elected to a full term in November 1994.

He would serve in the Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court until 1999, when he was appointed by Gov. Don Siegelman to the Alabama Supreme Court. He would serve on the state's highest court until January 2001, before returning to Tuscaloosa.

England was re-elected to the Circuit Court and serve until February of this year.

The honor on Thursday is just the latest for the courtroom legend. In May, Patch reported when Tuscaloosa City Schools surprised Judge England by naming its annual debate tournament and an award in his honor.
