Kentuck Provides Info, Schedule For August Art Workshops

Kentuck Art Center, despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, still has a plan for workshops in August.

NORTHPORT, AL. — The 49th installment of the Kentuck Festival of the Arts may be cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but the news has not stopped sustained efforts to bring the arts to the community. The Kentuck Art Center has a pair of workshops planned for next month that will observe social distancing guidelines, while seeking to provide a fun and safe experience for attendees.

Class sizes will be limited, Kentuck said, and take place in its largest classroom in the Georgine Clarke Building. Attendees will be required to wear masks and follow public health guidelines regarding social distancing and sanitation.

Pochoir (Aug. 22, 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.)

Instructor Beth Sheehan will teach on a class on Saturday, Aug. 22 for all ages hoping to learn Pochoir — a stenciling process made popular in 1930s Paris. Kentuck says the style is used to create crisp, colorful images that appear freshly inked. The class size will be limited to 10 students and the cost of tuition is $50. Students will also need to supply materials, including paper, pencils, a cutting mat, a craft knife (X-acto, Olfa, or similar), and ink or paint — two colors. Optional supplies include gloves, cotton rounds, mylar.

Caricature, Cartooning, and Anime (Aug. 29, 10 a.m. until noon)

Instructor Jamal Prewitt's class is open to all ages and skill levels who hope to learn more about the art of drawing anime, caricatures and cartoons on Saturday, Aug. 29. The cost of tuition for the class is $35 and students are asked to bring the following supplies: Pencils, erasers, a sketchbook for drawing paper and pens. The class is limited to nine students.
