TUSCALOOSA, AL — Cassius Lanier easily won a special election rematch against incumbent Sonya McKinstry Tuesday to secure the District 7 seat on the Tuscaloosa City Council.

Lanier garnered 844 votes (64%), compared to McKinstry's 460 votes, which stands as a stark contrast to the narrow margin that decided their first race in March. Lanier, an ex-felon who uses his past to motivate others, has never held public office. Lanier also pulled in 28 absentee votes in his favor, compared to McKinstry's 22.

With no other major races on the ballot, such as the mayor's race in March, turnout was noticeably lower. District 7 turnout was reported to be 15.3%, compared to 16% in the March 2 municipal election that saw Lanier win by less than 30 votes before a challenge by McKinstry saw the results thrown out by a judge.

Lanier campaigned on a platform of revitalization and engagement, along with addressing crime in District 7 and calling for the city to take a more proactive approach with respect to blighted properties like the McFarland Mall.
