Evans, who got his start in the game by playing softball as a second baseman with a keen glove, would go on to be inducted into both the Alabama Softball Hall of Fame and the West Alabama Softball Hall of Fame, according to a 2001 story published in the Tuscaloosa News.
Evans would ultimately take over the Brookwood High baseball team in 1983 and coach for 17 seasons. Winning several area championships, he also led the Panthers to a 5A Elite 8 appearance in 1989 and a Final Four in 1991.

He retired after the 1999 season, which saw his Panthers post a 17-9 record and win a class 4A Region championship.
The Darryl Evans Era was so impactful, in fact, that the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education earlier this year approved a measure renaming the Brookwood High baseball field in his honor.
According to his obituary, funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel says a visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service with military honors.
