TUSCALOOSA, AL — A national nonprofit organization has applied to open a charter school in Tuscaloosa and a public forum will be hosted this week by Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS).

Pathways in Education is described as a national network of nonprofit public schools and learning programs that partner with local school districts. Its website says its tuition-free charter school locations in Arizona, Idaho, Illinois and Louisiana.

The group is accredited through Cognia for Pre K–12 and postsecondary institutions

Pathways in Education is managed by Pathways Management Group (PMG) and says it utilizes a blended learning model to connect students to a wide variety of instructional modalities. This approach reportedly includes helping those who have previously struggled to find success in high school and beyond.

TCS says Pathways in Education has submitted an application to launch a charter school within the city, with TCS serving as the official charter authorizer for Tuscaloosa.

As part of its authorization role, TCS says it will hold a public meeting for residents to learn more about the proposal on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m. in Academy Hall at the Tuscaloosa Career & Technology Academy (TCTA).

TCS said representatives from Pathways in Education will present their vision for the school and take questions and comments from the public.
