Nearly 2,000 Vaccine Doses Given In Tuscaloosa Since Last Week

The latest update from the state health department still shows less than half of the Tuscaloosa metro's residents have been fully vaccinated

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa County reported 1,858 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered since last Thursday, which includes 459 residents who completed their vaccination series over this time, according to Tuesday's dashboard update published by the Alabama Department of Public Health.

To date, a total of 137,279 doses of the vaccine have been administered in Tuscaloosa County, representing 4% of the doses given thus far in Alabama.

Despite some coming around to public health recommendations supporting the efficacy of the vaccine, Tuesday's numbers still reflect public apprehension, as less than half of the population of the Tuscaloosa metro area has been fully vaccinated. To make matters worse, fears are being realized of a new nationwide surge in cases and hospitalizations.

As Patch reported on Monday, DCH Health System reported 52 total inpatients testing positive for the coronavirus, which marks the first time since February that the hospital system has topped 50 hospitalizations. Of those patients, hospital officials confirmed that more than 90% had not been vaccinated.

According to the state health department, Tuscaloosa County added 39 cases to its confirmed total on Tuesday, bringing the number of confirmed cases identified since the beginning of the pandemic to 17,882, with another 8,959 classified as probable.
