NORTHPORT, AL — The City of Northport has lured away another big hire from the City of Tuscaloosa, as the City Council voted 4-0 to bring on Tera Tubbs as Northport's next city engineer.

Tubbs currently works as executive director of Infrastructure and Public Services for the City of Tuscaloosa and follows City Administrator Glenda Webb as the latest heavy-hitter to leave Tuscaloosa City Hall for Northport.

The council unanimously approved the decision, with Council President Jeff Hogg abstaining due to relationships with applicants.

District 3 Councilman John Hinton chaired the search committee to fill the position in a permanent capacity after being vacant for nearly two years and expressed a high degree of optimism to Patch following the vote.

"I think this is a great hire for Northport, Mrs. Tubbs has been responsible for 550 employees in the City of Tuscaloosa, she's had six department heads working under her and has helped plan millions of dollars for the budgets," Hinton said. "I think we're extremely fortunate to be able to get her in Northport. I think we can expect great things in the future with our new city administrator and Mrs. Tubbs coming in. I just think the future is very bright for Northport."

Tubbs has served in her current role since February 2016 and previously worked as the director of the Tuscaloosa Department of Transportation for eight years. She holds a masters degree in civil engineering, as well as a bachelors degree, from the University of Alabama.

Hinton said the Civil Service Board initially had four applicants, before sending three on to the Council's Administration Committee.

Tubbs' contract will now be negotiated as the hiring process moves forward.
