Through the Habitat program, selected homeowners partner with the nonprofit by contributing sweat equity hours and completing financial education courses before purchasing their homes with an affordable mortgage.
The nonprofit's current plans include the construction of two new neighborhoods, giving 65 families the opportunity to become homeowners.
Habitat is also working on a new program called Operation Transformation, which aims to utilize these construction sites to train students of the construction trades from the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy (TCTA) and to teach construction skills to young non-violent offenders returning to society from incarceration through a partnership with the Dannon Project.
