Reading Allies Seeks Volunteers For Fall Semester At Tuscaloosa-Area Schools

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Reading Allies is looking for volunteers to spend 30 minutes a week helping young students strengthen their reading skills and build confidence during the fall semester.

The Tuscaloosa-area literacy organization says there is still time to register for its upcoming volunteer session, which begins the week of Sept. 8 and continues through the week of Nov. 16.

Reading Allies pairs volunteers with young readers for one-on-one literacy support, with organizers emphasizing that the weekly commitment is only 30 minutes.

"Whether you're a returning volunteer or new to the program, your support can make all the difference in a child's life," the Reading Allies team said in its call for volunteers.

While most participating schools still have openings during at least one volunteer time slot, the organization identified several schools and programs where additional help is especially needed.

Those high-need locations include:

• Oakdale Elementary School
• Vance Elementary School
• Taylorville Primary School
• Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School
• Tuscaloosa Academy of Student and Parent Achievement (TASPA)
• Englewood Elementary School
• Holt Elementary School
• Flatwoods Elementary School
• Central Elementary School

Reading Allies is encouraging community members who cannot volunteer themselves to share the opportunity with others who might be interested.
