Republican Cynthia Almond Unopposed In House District 63 Race

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Former Tuscaloosa City Council President Cynthia Lee Almond will be unopposed on a special election ballot in February 2022 to fill the seat left vacant by State Finance Director Bill Poole.

Tuesday at 5 p.m. marked the qualifying deadline for the special election, as no challengers qualified to run against Almond — a Republican. The primary is set for Oct. 19, with the special general election scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 1.

"I am so grateful for this opportunity and appreciate the outpouring of support for this endeavor," Almond told Patch on Tuesday. "I look forward to representing Tuscaloosa County in Montgomery!"

First elected to the Tuscaloosa City Council in 2005, Almond was popular among constituents and never saw another challenger on the ballot for the rest of her time in local office. She opted not to seek another term earlier this year.

The winner of the special election will then serve the remainder of Poole's unexpired term, which will be up for election in November 2022.

While Almond will seek to be the next new face on the Tuscaloosa delegation, both State Rep. Rodney Sullivan, R-Northport and State Rep. Rich Wingo, R-Tuscaloosa, announced they would not seek new terms in 2022, which will open up two more seats on the local delegation.
