“This is our favorite time of year because people are inspired to give generously to those in need,” Tuscaloosa Salvation Army Captain Michael Chisolm said. "Event participants can also adopt an Angel Tree Recipient and provide toys and clothing to children who would otherwise go without."

The nationwide nonprofit says the goal for the Red Kettle drive this year is $100,000 — $75,000 from the Salvation Army's traditional kettle and $25,000 its our virtual kettle.

Organizations said donations from last year's Red Kettle Campaign enabled nonprofits to serve over 51,456 meals, provide 17,370 shelter nights, and help 346 families remain in their homes.

"Contributions to the Red Kettle Campaign allow The Salvation Army to support individuals and families in need or crisis this holiday season and throughout the year," Chisolm said. "We are committed to helping our community overcome poverty in every season. All donations support local programs and services to community members when they need it most.”

The Salvation Army also recognizes the need for alternative giving and fundraising.

Additionally, Salvation Army Angel Tree will also become available, which support children and families struggling with the additional expectations and expenses of the holiday season.

"We still have many Christmas angels that need adopting," Salvation Army Lt. Schelika Chisolm said. "Adoptions can be made at our University Mall kick-off or at The Salvation Army Center of Hope, located at 2902 Greensboro Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401."
