Theatre Tuscaloosa Reveals 2021-22 Production Schedule

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Theatre Tuscaloosa on Wednesday announced the productions for it 2021-2022 season, which will feature three plays, two musicals, the Alabama Community Theatre Festival, a special Page to Stage performance, and two SecondStage productions.

"Always… Patsy Cline" (Sept. 10-19)

  • Written by Ted Swindly
  • Summary: "Lauren Wilson returns as Patsy’s biggest fan, “Louise,” and Tuscaloosa’s own Rosie Webber will play Patsy Cline (September 10-19). Packed with hits like “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” and “I Fall to Pieces,” this show is a funny, musical stroll down memory lane."

"Girls’ Weekend" (Dec. 10-19)

  • Written by Karen Schaeffer.
  • Summary: "In this mad-cap, door-slamming comedy, four best friends get together for a girls’ weekend at a remote cabin in the middle of winter. Not everyone plans to be away from their sweethearts that long, however, and soon the bottles tip up, the secrets spill out, and the men sneak in!"

"On Golden Pond" (Feb. 25 - March 6, 2022)

  • Directed by Director Emeritus Paul K. Looney
  • Summary: "This classic play inspired the Academy Award-winning film with Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn. Norman is a curmudgeon with a strained relationship with his daughter, Chelsea. Together for their 48th summer at Golden Pond, he and his wife nevertheless agree to care for Billy, the son of Chelsea's fiancé, and a most unexpected relationship blooms."

"The Mamalogues" (May 20-29, 2022)

  • Written by Lisa B. Thompson.
  • Summary: "This satirical comedy celebrates the lives of middle-class Black women as they creatively balance home and career while raising their children in a dangerous world. Together at a mother’s retreat, Lauren, Beverley, and Tasha share their stories about playground racial profiling, being the “only one” at the PTA meeting, the lack of organic food in the ‘hood, and more."

"Mamma Mia!" (July 15-24, 2022)

  • Summary: "This unforgettable show inspired a movie and a sequel! ABBA's timeless songs propel an enchanting tale about a young woman who wants to invite the father she’s never known to her wedding. Together, a mother, a daughter, and three possible dads, find themselves taking a trip down the aisle audiences will never forget!"

Page to Stage (Oct. 27-30, 2021)

  • Summary: "Page to Stage returns with Busy Day, a musical memoir about and starring the Alabama Jazz Hall of Famer Rickey Powell, October 29 & 30, with a school matinee performance on Oct. 27. Audiences will journey from Alabama to New York City and across Europe as Rickey recounts his musical career and experiences growing up in 1960s Alabama."

SecondStage (Oct. 6, 2021 - March 27, 2022)

  • Summary: "The SecondStage season includes two productions. Stop Kiss by Diana Son runs October 6-10 at Grace Presbyterian Church (113 Hargrove Road). In this powerful and moving contemporary play, Callie meets Sara to answer an ad for cat-sitting, and the two unexpectedly fall in love. Their first kiss provokes a violent attack that transforms their lives in a way they could never anticipate. The SecondStage season concludes with the fourth annual Festival of One Acts March 23-27, 2022, welcoming new directors Jamie Shannon Ertle Ferguson and Norquina 'Q' Rieves."

The Diviners (April 8-10, 2022)

Summary: "A troubled young man befriends a disenchanted former preacher in small-town, 1930s Indiana. The boy’s fear of water, the preacher’s crisis of faith, and the townsfolk’s need for spiritual guidance come to a head in this beautifully theatrical and tragic tale. Audiences will be supporting the talent of the future when they attend this student production."


Alabama Community Theatre Festival (Jan. 14-16, 2022)

Summary: "Theatre Tuscaloosa is also partnering with the Alabama Conference of Theatre to host the Alabama Community Theatre Festival. Up to eight community theatres from throughout Alabama will present 60-minute performances in the Bean-Brown Theatre. Tickets to individual performances and/or the entire festival will be available to the general public."
