TUSCALOOSA, AL — Alabama freshman safety Caleb Downs on Wednesday was announced as a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Award by the Maxwell Football Club.

The award, named after former Crimson Tide standout Shaun Alexander, is presented annually to the most outstanding freshman in college football.

Downs, a native of Hoschton, Georgia, was selected as one of 14 semifinalists, as he leads Alabama and ranks sixth in the Southeastern Conference with 63 tackles, including one for loss.

He also also been awarded SEC Freshman of the Week twice this season for his performances against Middle Tennessee and Mississippi State.

Alabama's only winner of the award was Will Anderson, Jr. following the 2020 season.

Finalists for the Shaun Alexander Award will be announced on Nov. 29, with the winner revealed on Dec. 27.
