TPD Arrests Two Following Unrelated High-Speed Pursuits

Two men are in custody and one suspect is still at large following a pair of overnight high-speed police pursuits in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A Tuscaloosa man was arrested this morning following a pursuit that saw him abandon his car after a pursuit and attempted to hide a half-pound of marijuana in the woods.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department says Zyperrion De’Auntrey-Love Dixon, 21, was charged with attempting to elude, possession of a pistol without a permit and first-degree possession of marijuana.

Dixon also faces an additional charge of reckless endangerment for leaving the occupied car in drive before he abandoned it. TPD says a woman in the back seat was unable to exit before it rolled and crashed into the ravine behind the Winn Dixie at Five Points.

Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue paramedics then treated her on-scene before she was hospitalized for further medical treatment.

TPD told local media the pursuit began when a patrol officer tried to stop a 2009 Sonata traveling on Veterans Memorial Parkway around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. The driver was going 65-70 mph in a 35 mph zone, and refused to stop.

He continued driving east toward Five Points, and along with a front seat passenger, left the vehicle once they reached a dead end on 40th Way East.

TPD says an officer could hear a woman screaming as he approached, but was unable to reach the car before it rolled several times off the steep embankment at the rear of the grocery store. She was able to climb out on her own, but suffered injuries to her nose and face.

"Officers searched the wooded area until they located Dixon and a bag containing a 230 grams of
marijuana, what appeared to be THC cartridges and digital scales," TPD said in a press release. "K9 officer Bako led officers to Dixon, who was taken into custody without incident.

In an unrelated pursuit, several officers were still searching the area for the passenger when a driver in a Honda then passed at a high rate of speed. An officer followed, with the driver refusing to stop and reaching speeds of 95 miles per hour around the area of Loop and Hargrove roads. The Honda continued west on James I. Harrison Parkway, then north on Albright Road and onto McFarland Boulevard before exiting at University Boulevard, heading east toward Alberta.

The driver then turned onto 24th Avenue East, before turning on to Second Street East where he stopped at a residence, ran to the front door and surrendered.

TPD says Christopher Binion, 25, was then arrested and is now being held on multiple outstanding, unrelated warrants issued by TPD and outside agencies, along with new charges of attempting to elude and several traffic citations.

This case is unrelated to the first pursuit. The passenger from the first pursuit remains at large as of the publication of this story.
