TPD: One Dead, One Injured In Shooting At Sun Valley Apartments

TUSCALOOSA, AL. — Police say one person is dead and another hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a shooting at a 36th Avenue apartment complex Sunday afternoon.

Officers initially responded to a call of a shooting involving two people in Sun Valley Apartments at 1:38 p.m. Sunday. After a brief investigation, it was released that one male victim, who has not been identified at this time, was fatally shot and later died from his injuries at DCH Regional Medical Center.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department said a second person remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds that are not thought to be life-threatening.

TPD went on to say three people have been detained and are now being questioned by Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit investigators.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Brent Blankley lamented the uptick in gun violence seen in the city and urged those in the community to think about their decisions before they act.

"When I was growing up you had a lot of people fight, and I’m not saying go out and fight by any means ... nobody was shooting each other," Blankley told media on Sunday. "I don’t understand the culture today where you try to solve all of your problems by gun violence. You need to think about your decisions because you’re throwing your life away and somebody else's life away about something that, in two months from now, you may not even think of. But if you go out and shoot someone, you’re going to pay for it the rest of your life."

TPD spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor told Patch the department has responded to seven assault shootings in the last month, two of which have been fatal. These numbers include the shooting at Sun Valley Apartments on Sunday.

Blankley then commented that officers and the public alike are tired of it being no secret that violent shootings are up in Tuscaloosa. In recent days, the police chief has been vocal toward parents in the community to consider their role in helping stop gun violence by watching their children's behavior more closely.

"I wish parents would search their kid's rooms, their vehicles," he said. "People are ruining their lives making split-second decisions shooting somebody. Then you have two parties at that point that it’s basically the end of their lives."

The Tuscaloosa Police Department has confirmed that officers responded Sunday afternoon to a shooting at Sun Valley Apartments.

TPD spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor told Patch that officers responded to the apartment complex in the 5100 block of 36th Avenue at 1:38 p.m. for reports of one or possibly two people shot.

Taylor then said no one involved in the shooting has been located at this time and the incident remains under investigation.
