Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner Dead At 70

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner, a longtime public servant who represented District 5 for nearly three decades, died Friday.

The news of Tyner’s passing was confirmed in a Facebook post made by the City of Tuscaloosa Friday afternoon.

He was 70 years old.

Tyner was first elected to the City Council in 1997 and served seven consecutive terms, including two terms as council president.

His tenure was closely tied to the Alberta community, where he advocated for major public and economic development projects.

The City of Tuscaloosa said Tyner’s efforts helped bring about the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center, improvements along University Boulevard East and the recruitment of SWJ Technology.

The city said Tyner was also a longtime advocate for animal welfare and served as chairman of the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter Advisory Committee.

“It is with profound sadness that the City of Tuscaloosa shares the passing of City Council President Kip Tyner,” the city said in its announcement.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox has ordered city flags lowered to half-staff in Tyner’s honor.
