Tuscaloosa City Schools To Continue Free Meals For All Students In 2026-27

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS) students will once again receive free breakfast and lunch during the 2026-27 school year through the federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).

The school system announced Monday that this will be made possible through its continued participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Community Eligibility Provision.

TCS says families will not need to complete meal applications or pay for school meals. All students enrolled in Tuscaloosa City Schools will be eligible to receive breakfast and lunch at no cost.

The Community Eligibility Provision, established under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, allows qualifying school districts in low-income areas to provide free meals to every enrolled student without requiring individual household applications.

District officials said the program reduces administrative work, gives students more time to eat by shortening cafeteria lines and helps ensure children arrive in class well-nourished and ready to learn.

School breakfasts and lunches will continue to meet USDA nutrition guidelines for healthy school meals.
