TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa City Schools may be out for the summer but the school system is looking to fill approximately 119 vacant positions for 2023-24 school year.

TCS says 60 of these positions are for teachers, while another 17 positions for for bus drivers. q

“We are looking for passionate and caring individuals who are deeply committed to making a difference in our students' lives every day,” TCS Human Resources Executive Director Deron Cameron said. “TCS is extremely fortunate to have 1,400 compassionate and dedicated employees already, so we look forward to these same types of people joining us."

Cameron explained that the school system offers a range of benefits and professional development opportunities for employees, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance and state retirement

What's more, Cameron pointed out that the school system also offers competitive pay, at 3.5% higher than the state pay scale.

Other incentives include a $2,000 sign-on bonus for bus drivers and all training is provided by TCS, with a starting pay of $22.87 per hour.

“TCS has some of the highest-paid bus drivers in the state of Alabama,” TCS Transportation Director Ron Schappacher said. “Some of our employees are happy with just working the minimum hours required, while others earn several thousand dollars additional each month by driving mid-day trips, field trips, and after-school trips."

TCS says drivers can work four hours per day or more, if they want, and can have summer off with paid holidays including a week at Thanksgiving, Spring Break and a two-week break in December.
