Tuscaloosa City Schools Honors Exemplary Employees During Apple Awards

Tuscaloosa City Schools on Monday honored eight exemplary employees as part of its annual Apple Awards at the Tuscaloosa River Market.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa City Schools on Monday honored eight exemplary employees as part of its annual Apple Awards at the Tuscaloosa River Market.

In total, 64 individuals were nominated from all 21 city schools. From there, TCS says eight district award winners were selected in three categories: Teacher of the Year for both secondary and elementary categories; Support Employee of the Year for secondary, elementary, transportation; and central support team categories and a new Interdisciplinary Innovation award for both secondary and elementary.

"We are lucky to have dedicated employees across our system who work tirelessly each and every day to make a positive difference in the lives of our students," TCS Superintendent Mike Daria said. "The Apple Awards celebrate the best of the best in our system, and we are excited to highlight the excellence these people represent."

What's more, TCS also honored three community partners for their contribution: Shelton State Community College, The University of Alabama College of Education and the Nick's Kids Foundation.

  • Teacher of the Year - Elementary: Amber Whitcomb of Woodland Forrest Elementary
  • Teacher of the Year - Secondary: Ryan Ballard of Northridge Middle School
  • Support Employee of the Year - Elementary: Nichole Redding of Woodland Forrest Elementary
  • Support Employee of the Year - Secondary: Nakesha Coleman-Wesley of Eastwood Middle School
  • Support Employee of the Year - Central Support Team: Kim Hamner
  • Support Employee of the Year - Transportation: Greg Rogers
  • Interdisciplinary Innovation Award - Elementary: Paige Weiland (Holtz) of Skyland Elementary
  • Interdisciplinary Innovation Award - Secondary: Amanda Anderson of Eastwood Middle School
  • Community Spirit Award Winners: Shelton State Community College, University of Alabama College of Education and the Nick's Kids Foundation
