Tuscaloosa County Adopts FY24 Budget, 4% Pay Raise For Employees

The Tuscaloosa County Commission on Wednesday approved the budget for the upcoming fiscal year and employee pay raises.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa County Commission on Wednesday approved a 4% cost of living adjustment (COLA) pay raise for county employees as part of its fiscal year 2024 budget, which represents the 37th consecutive year where the county has provided COLA raises to its workers.

While slightly down from the 5% pay raise approved for the FY2023 budget, the Commission lauded the county's ability to have offered the raises for decades.

"It's a testament not just to this commission, but the ones who came before it," District 3 Commissioner Mark Nelson said. "And what great stewards of money the commission has been. Those who came before us allowed us to be in a financial position to be able to do that."

Following the approval of the COLA raises, the Commission also unanimously approved a $154.58 million budget for fiscal year 2024. This marks an increase from the $146.8 million budget approved by the county for FY2023.

Here are some of the budgeted line items

  • $75,979,316 — General Fund operating budget.
  • $33,929,702 — County Road and Bridge Fund.
  • $2,550,000 — County Rebuild Alabama Fund.
  • $20,140,779 — Coronavirus Rescue Act Fund.
