The friendly competition between the DA's offices in Tuscaloosa and Auburn is part of Reach Out & Read Alabama — a program of the Alabama Chapter-American Academy of Pediatrics.
Since 1996, the initiative has seen more than 1.6 million brand new books prescribed to Alabama’s youngest and neediest children. The organizations says it reaches over 100,000 children each year, most of whom are considered "at risk."
As of the publication of this article, Auburn had a sizable lead after just a few days, with $950 raised, while the Tuscaloosa County DA's Office has raised $295 from nine donors.
