Tuscaloosa County Jail Inmate Death Prompts Investigation

The 39-year-old inmate was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday and pronounced dead at the scene.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is currently investigating the death of an inmate at the Tuscaloosa County Jail after a 39-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 3:40 p.m. Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office said detention officers at the jail responded to assist the inmate and life-saving measures were reportedly administered by jail staff until emergency medical responders arrived.

However, the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene and his identity has not been released at this time.

The sheriff's office did say there were no obvious signs of injury noted and the cause of death is pending an autopsy.
