Tuscaloosa County Tops 10,000 Cumulative COVID-19 Cases

Tuscaloosa County topped another milestone on Sunday as the county reported 10,083 total COVID-19 cases, topping 10,000 for the first time.

TUSCALOOSA, AL. — In an alarming week of breaking records for coronavirus hospitalizations and single-day averages for new cases, Tuscaloosa County topped another painful milestone on Sunday as it climbed above 10,000 cumulative COVID-19 cases amid a nationwide surge in new cases.

According to Sunday's totals posted by Bamatracker.com, Tuscaloosa County added 117 new cases on Sunday, bringing the county's cumulative total to 10,083, with a new 7-day average for new cases coming in at 107.14 per day. As new hospitalizations surge locally and across the country, the new numbers come just days after Tuscaloosa County topped its highs for new hospitalizations for DCH Health System, as well as the county's 7-day average for new cases topping 100 for the first time during the pandemic.

On Sunday, DCH Health System reported adding 14 new cases, bringing its overall inpatient total to 116 — the highest mark since the beginning of the pandemic. DCH also reported 32 coronavirus patients receiving treatment in intensive care units, marking another high for the system.

As of Sunday, Tuscaloosa County has recorded 134 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, coming out to a death rate of 1.33%, while a total of 277 patients have died at DCH after testing positive for the virus. It's important to note that not all of these patients were residents of Tuscaloosa County and the numbers do not necessarily indicate the cause of death being the virus, rather that the patient was positive at the time of their death.
