TUSCALOOSA, AL — A Tuscaloosa man has been charged after reportedly discharging a firearm on 49th Avenue Thursday afternoon.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department says officers were asked to accompany a man to a residence in the 2300 block of 49th Avenue at 1 p.m. to address an issue involving child custody.

After an officer met with the occupants of the home and left around 1:25 p.m., TPD said he was approximately one block away when he heard shots fired and called for backup.
The suspected shooter — Thomas Averette, 34 — was taken into custody and charged with two counts each of discharging a firearm, menacing and reckless endangerment.
