Tuscaloosa Man Killed In Wreck On Hugh Thomas Bridge Involving TCSO Patrol Vehicle

A Tuscaloosa man was killed in a crash Saturday morning involving a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office vehicle on the Hugh Thomas Bridge.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Northport Police Department says a Tuscaloosa man was killed in a crash Saturday morning involving a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle on the Hugh Thomas Bridge.

Assistant Chief Keith Carpenter said at approximately 2:07 a.m., a traffic accident was reported in the southbound lanes of the bridge going from Northport.

He said Northport Police, Northport Fire and Rescue and NorthStar Ambulance responded to the scene where they located the accident involving a 2016 Honda Accord that was driven by Robert Brooks Robles, 24, of Tuscaloosa and a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office vehicle.

A preliminary investigation found that Robles was traveling north in the southbound lanes of the Hugh Thomas Bridge, when he collided head-on with a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Chevrolet Tahoe.

Carpenter said both Robles and the sheriff's deputy were transported to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Robles was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the sheriff’s deputy was treated and released Saturday morning.

The fatal crash is being investigated by the Northport Police Department Traffic Reconstruction Unit.
