Tuscaloosa To Rename Park, Street In Honor Of Kip Tyner

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox on Monday announced the city will rename Alberta Park and 26th Avenue East in honor of late City Council President Kip Tyner.

Alberta Park will be renamed Kip Tyner Plaza, while 26th Avenue East will become Kip Tyner Parkway.

Maddox announced the honorary name changes during a Celebration of Life and Service honoring Tyner.

As Patch previously reported, Tyner died Sept. 18 at age 70, with city leaders on Oct. 6 expected to call for a special election to fill Tyner's seat and his unexpired term on the council.

"Kip's heart and soul is in this park," Maddox said. "I know we will all miss our friend dearly, but we will continue to tell Mr. Tyner's stories of service and remember how much better he made Alberta."

Tyner was first elected to represent District 5 on the Tuscaloosa City Council in 1997 and served seven consecutive terms.

He also served two terms as council president.

During his nearly three decades on the council, Tyner was closely involved with development and improvement projects in Alberta, including the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center, recruitment of SWJ Technology and enhancements associated with the University Boulevard East Improvements Project.

The city said additional details on when the honorary name changes will take effect will be announced at a later date.
