Tuscaloosa Tennis Center Named One Of Nation's Top Tennis Facilities

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa Tennis Center has been recognized as one of the top tennis facilities in the country after receiving a 2026 USTA Outstanding Facility Award.

The United States Tennis Association announced Wednesday that the Tuscaloosa facility was among 41 nationwide selected for the annual awards, which recognize excellence in the construction and renovation of tennis facilities.

The recipients were honored Aug. 31 during an awards reception at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York as part of the 2026 U.S. Open.

Operated by the Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority (PARA), the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center recently expanded to 30 courts, increasing its capacity for recreational play, instruction, leagues and tournaments.

PARA officials said the expansion is expected to help Tuscaloosa attract larger tournaments while providing additional opportunities for junior and adult players.

“The expansion of the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center is a tremendous step forward for tennis in our community,” Director of Tennis Mike Goldammer said. “With 30 courts, we can serve more players, grow our junior and adult programs, attract larger tournaments and create even more opportunities for people to enjoy the game.”

PARA CEO Brian Davis credited the City of Tuscaloosa and PARA leadership with helping bring the expansion to fruition.

“This recognition reflects what can happen when community leaders share a vision and work together to make it a reality,” Davis said.

He specifically praised Mayor Walt Maddox, City Council President Kip Tyner, the Tuscaloosa City Council and PARA's board of directors for supporting the project.

Facilities considered for the USTA award were evaluated on factors including overall layout, court surfaces, lighting, maintenance, accommodations for players and spectators, aesthetics, landscaping and amenities.

Judges also considered facilities' participation in grassroots tennis programs.

Awards were presented in several categories, including public courts, private facilities, educational institutions and innovation.

“Facilities like the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center are the foundation of tennis in America,” said Theodore Loehrke, USTA managing director and head of section partnerships. “Their commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to experience the sport exemplifies what it means to grow the game at the grassroots level.”

Each of the 2026 award winners will receive a wall plaque and an all-weather sign that can be displayed at the facility.
