The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit says its investigators were called out Friday, Oct. 15 to DCH in regards to an infant who had arrived at the hospital by ambulance.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multi-agency unit, said the infant had been found by its grandmother, who was keeping the child.

"She reported that she found the child in its bed not breathing and had called 911," Kennedy said in a press release Monday night. "A death investigation was begun by Violent Crimes Unit investigators at that time even because no cause of death was known."

He went on to say the medical examiner’s office on Monday informed investigators that the infant’s cause of death was indicative of abuse and would be deemed a homicide.

"It was determined that grandmother was alone with the child at the time of the injury that caused the infant’s death," Kennedy said.
