Tuscaloosa's Sherrod Named As Next Phenix City Schools Superintendent
Janet Sherrod is reportedly finalizing contract negotiations to become the next superintendent for the city school system in Phenix City.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Longtime Tuscaloosa City Schools administrator Janet Sherrod is reportedly finalizing contract negotiations to become the next superintendent for the city school system in Phenix City.

The Phenix City Board of Education approved the new contract and made the announcement Friday. Sherrod has served in multiple roles at all levels of education, most recently as the executive director of Learning Supports for Tuscaloosa City Schools.

“I’m extremely excited about joining the incredible team within Phenix City Schools," Sherrod said in a statement. "I am ready to work with administrators and community members to continue moving the district forward.”
Sherrod's anticipated official start date is June 1.

Phenix City Board of Education Chair Yolaunda Daniel said Sherrod was identified as the most qualified candidate with a proven track record of educational excellence and brings with her a wealth of experience and a passion for student achievement.
“We are excited to work with Dr. Sherrod and continue to champion student growth and achievement," Daniel said. "She will do well as our school system’s next leader. The Board is ready to welcome her and support her as she guides our system to future success.”
During her career in education, Sherrod is noted for her time as principal of Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, where she saw the school removed from the state's list of failing schools.
From there, she served as the first principal of Greensboro Middle School and the first female principal of Greensboro East Elementary School. She went on to work for Midfield City Schools as assistant Principal at Rutledge Middle School and also taught mathematics for Tuscaloosa County Schools.
A resident of Northport, Sherrod is originally from Pickens County and has been a visibly involved member of the community apart from her nearly three decades in education.
Janet Sherrod and her husband Ricky Sherrod are co-owners of Northport Funeral and Cremation Services and are members of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, in Tuscaloosa.
