Tuska Makes UA Debut At New Home Near Bryant-Denny Stadium

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A familiar face to many in Tuscaloosa has moved to a new home on the University of Alabama campus and will likely soon become a popular fixture on game days and school days, alike.

Tuska, a 19-foot-tall, seven-ton bronze elephant statue was installed by McAbee Construction at the new Tuska Plaza at the southeast corner of University Boulevard and Wallace Wade Avenue in front of Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Laborers could be seen Monday around the statue working on new landscaping. The Tuska Plaza also features a large pedestal for the statue, sidewalks surrounding it and lighting elements for nighttime viewing.

The statue was recently given to the university by The Westervelt Company, along with a donation from former UA Athletic Director Bill Battle and his wife Mary.

According to UA, Tuska was sculpted by English artist Terry Mathews and has resided at the North River Yacht Club since September 2000.
