U.S. Marshals Task Force Officer Shot, Murder Suspect Killed In Marengo County

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A U.S. Marshals Service task force officer was shot and a murder suspect was killed Tuesday morning during an attempt to serve an arrest warrant in Marengo County.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said officers assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Task Force were executing a warrant for an individual wanted for murder in the 100 block of Ruby Drive in Pine Hill when the shooting occurred around 6 a.m.

According to ALEA, a task force officer was struck by gunfire after officers arrived at the location.

Officers returned fire, fatally wounding 47-year-old Ernest Christopher Nathan.

ALEA said Nathan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wounded officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

The agency did not release the officer's name or provide additional information about the officer's injuries.

Special agents with ALEA's State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the officer-involved shooting at the request of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Once the investigation is complete, ALEA said its findings will be turned over to the Marengo County District Attorney's Office for review.
