UA CrossingPoints Program To Host College Prep Summit Wednesday

The College Prep Summit will be held from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 in the ballroom at the UA Student Center.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The CrossingPoints Program at the University of Alabama is set to host its annual College Prep Summit on Wednesday, which will provide a face-to-face opportunity for students with intellectual disabilities, their parents, and educators to explore the possibilities of postsecondary education.

The free annual event will feature speakers such as UA’s College of Education Dean Peter Hlebowitsh and Cathryn Weir, director for ThinkCollege’s National Coordinating Center.

For those unfamiliar with the highly celebrated program, CrossingPoints provides opportunities for three tiers of students with disabilities:

  • Tier 1 students — age 18-21 — are those with significant disabilities who are still receiving services during the academic year under the the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
  • Tier 2 or the Summer Bridge Program is a postsecondary pipeline program for college-age students over the age of 19 with intellectual disabilities.
  • Tier 3 students participate in a non-degree certificate program for young adults with intellectual disabilities who are interested in receiving further post-secondary education at The University of Alabama.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from current students, peer mentors, and parents of students with intellectual disabilities and their experiences in postsecondary education.

In addition to those from the Capstone, CrossingPoints says Vanderbilt University, Clemson University, Auburn University, Mississippi State University, Alabama A&M University, the University of South Alabama and others will be present to engage with participants.
