Dr. W. Edward Back has been appointed as the interim dean of The University of Alabama’s College of Engineering effective Aug. 16.
“The College is fortunate to have many highly qualified scholars and leaders who could step into the role as interim dean and I was faced with a challenging but welcome task, choosing one from among a distinguished group,” said Dr. James T. Dalton, UA’s executive vice president and provost. “I look forward to working with Dr. Back in this new capacity in the year ahead.”

Back is professor and head of the department of civil, construction and environmental engineering. While at UA, he has also served as the director of the Research Center for Sustainable Infrastructure within the college.
Back has extensive experience in the field of infrastructure engineering. He has taught engineering best practices for organizations throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa. Additionally, he served as an advisor for multiple large engineering projects constructed throughout the world.
During his time at UA, Back has been the recipient of eight University teaching awards including the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award and the College of Engineering’s Hackney Leadership Award.
Back will serve as the interim dean until a new dean is appointed and begins in 2022.
