Update Given After Night Of Violence In Tuscaloosa

Investigators are actively working two shootings on Willow Lane and off of 60th Street in Tuscaloosa that left one dead and three injured.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) says one person is dead and three others injured following a pair of overnight shootings in Tuscaloosa.

VCU Captain Marty Sellers told local media that the first call came in at approximately 11:30 p.m. Friday, when Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a shooting at Branscomb Apartments off of 60th Street.

Sellers said three people were shot in total, as well as two vehicles and an apartment, with one 18-year-old woman critically injured. He went on to explain that two 21-year-old men were shot as they were leaving, resulting in one requiring surgery and the other being treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

In the Branscomb Apartments shooting, the woman injured remains in critical condition as of the publication of this story.

The second shooting call came in at approximately 12:14 a.m. Saturday morning, when the Tuscaloosa Police Department responded to multiple calls regarding a shooting in the 3200 block of Willow Lane in the city's West End.

Sellers said officers found a man shot multiple times, with his injuries ultimately being fatal. Investigators identified the man as Versaun Leonard, 19.

"We continue to speak to witnesses and gather evidence in these cases," he said. "It is unclear if the cases are connected."
