West Alabama Mourns Death Of Freshman Football Player

LIVINGSTON, AL — The University of West Alabama issued a statement following the death of freshman football player Elisha “EJ” Jones III, who was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Baldwin County on Saturday.

Jones, a graduate of Baldwin County High School, signed with UWA in February after graduating in May.

During his three-year career at Baldwin County, he recorded 162 tackles and 24 tackles for loss. As a senior, he averaged nearly 12 tackles per game and earned Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 6A All-State honorable mention honors.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of EJ, a member of our athletic family,” UWA Director of Athletics Brett Gilliland said in a statement released on Monday. “His passion, dedication, and infectious smile made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, teammates and coaches during this incredibly difficult time. EJ will forever be remembered and deeply missed.”

Head football coach Scott Cochran said Jones quickly made an impression on the Tigers.

“Although he was only with us for a short period of time, he definitely left a mark on every member of this team with his positive attitude and his contagious personality,” Cochran said. “We are very sad to lose someone in our family. We send our condolences and prayers to EJ’s family. I know he touched many lives and put a smile on many people’s faces.”
