Tuscaloosa City Schools says Jones made a lasting impact on the school system through decades of service as a teacher, principal and school board leader.
Jones retired in 1995 as principal of Woodland Forrest Elementary after 34 years in public education, leaving a legacy centered on academic excellence and student success.

Following her retirement, Jones continued her service to the community and was appointed to the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education in 1997, later becoming the first woman elected as the board’s at-large chair in its 119-year history.
Jones passed away in 2024 at the age of 86.
She served eight years in that role and was widely recognized for her advocacy on behalf of children and her leadership in education.
In addition to her work with the school system, Jones served on several community boards, including the Tuscaloosa Education Foundation, focusing on initiatives to advance education in the area.
Current Woodland Forrest Elementary Principal Teresa Bivens said the renaming is a fitting tribute to Jones’ influence.
“Mrs. Jones dedicated her life to serving children and strengthening this school community,” Bivens said. “It is only fitting that our library — a place where students grow, discover and dream — will carry her name and continue her legacy for generations to come.”
