Arrest Made In Murder Of 78-Year-Old Birmingham Man

The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with an Aug. 29 homicide.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with a homicide investigation involving a burglary and the murder of 78-year-old Lewis Zicarelli.

The homicide occurred on Thursday, August 29, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Officers from the East Precinct responded to 8645 9th Court Circle South to investigate a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers found Zicarelli lying in the front room of the residence and unresponsive. Zicarelli appeared to have suffered an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived along with the Jefferson County Coroner and pronounced him dead on the scene.

Investigators received information that the victim was shot as he responded to a knock at the front door. After he was shot, Zicarelli's car was reportedly stolen.

Sept. 11, Vestavia Hills police pursued the stolen vehicle and stopped the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Eric Kindred. Birmingham police issued a capital murder warrant for Kindred, in addition to a theft of property warrant and burglary warrant.

Kindred is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.
