Halloween in Vestavia Hills is a full contact sport. Between the trick or treat loop through Liberty Park, the church parking lot trunk or treats, or a bowl by the front door, a lot of caramel, taffy, and sour gummies are about to meet a lot of molars. Sticky candy is the sneaky one. It hangs on in the grooves of the back teeth, and sour candy piles acid on top of the sugar, which is how a small soft spot can become a cavity by Thanksgiving. When one does show up, the fix is usually a quiet one. At Stuart Curry Dentistry in Cahaba Heights, we use tooth colored composite for nearly every filling. The repair bonds right to the tooth, closes off the edge where new decay would sneak in, and matches the shade closely enough that nobody passing the stuffing will notice. An older silver filling that has started to fail can usually be traded for composite as well.

Book the cleaning right after the last fun size bar disappears. Easy timing. A professional cleaning gets at the tartar brushing cannot touch, including the hardened buildup tucked just below the gumline, and the polish at the end lifts the light surface stains a season of treats tends to leave behind. Then comes the exam, which covers more than most people realize: new radiographs to check for decay between the teeth, an oral cancer screening, a look at every tooth surface and every existing filling or crown, and a gum evaluation on top of all that. Every six months is the right rhythm for most families. Catch a cavity early and the filling stays small and conservative. Wait too long and it usually does not. Parents juggling school pickups across Vestavia Hills and Cahaba Heights can book the whole household with Dr. Curry and his team, and little ones can start coming in by their first birthday.

Cavities get all the attention this time of year. Gum disease is the quieter problem, and sugar feeds the plaque behind it too. Early on it usually does not hurt, so a mouth that feels perfectly fine can still have gums that bleed when you floss or pockets slowly forming around the teeth. Once a pocket goes past about four millimeters, a toothbrush cannot clean the bottom of it. A deep cleaning then becomes the way to get the hardened buildup out. The teeth being treated are numbed first. After that, the maintenance schedule is built around your own gums, which sometimes means a visit every three to four months instead of six. It matters for anything planned down the road, too: a crown, a bridge, or a veneer needs a healthy foundation, which is why we start periodontal care at Stuart Curry Dentistry by measuring those pockets.

Here is the secret to surviving candy season. Brush, floss, and keep sticky treats to mealtimes rather than grazing all evening. Then get the next checkup on the calendar before Thanksgiving pie and holiday cookies show up. A November or December visit also works out for families who like to use their dental benefits before the year closes. At Stuart Curry Dentistry, we welcome new patients from Vestavia Hills, Cahaba Heights, Mountain Brook, and Homewood. Call (205) 972-3831 or request a visit through the Appointments page; the office is open Monday through Thursday, plus the first and third Friday of each month.
