Fall in Vestavia Hills has a rhythm to it. School settles in, the sports schedule fills up, and somewhere in there somebody in the house decides this is the year the crooked front tooth finally gets handled. Orthodontics increasingly means a set of clear plastic trays instead of a mouth full of metal. You wear them about twenty two hours a day and take them out to eat. Most cases run right around twelve months, with the full range from six months to two years depending on how far the teeth have to travel; traditional braces usually ask for eighteen to twenty four. You work through a series of trays, sometimes as many as fifty, picking up a new set every few weeks. Nothing is cemented on, so there are no tightening appointments and none of the chalky white enamel marks old braces left behind. The team at Stuart Curry Dentistry works out of an office on Cahaba River Road in Cahaba Heights, just off I 459 and Highway 280.

Straightening teeth only pays off if the teeth underneath are healthy, so this starts with an exam and a cleaning rather than a tray. It is also where aligners quietly beat brackets. The trays come out, so you brush and floss the way you always have and keep sitting for normal cleanings on the usual schedule, instead of steering a toothbrush around wires for a year and a half. Clean the trays with sensitive toothpaste and a soft bristle brush, then put them back in, including overnight. Families across Cahaba Heights, Liberty Park and Patchwork Farms can stack the hygiene visit and the aligner check into one trip, since the exams and cleanings at Stuart Curry Dentistry run out of the same office as the aligner work. One location, one independent practice, one team handling both, with a 5.0 rating across more than 296 Google reviews.

Clear aligners fit teens and adults with slightly overlapping or crooked teeth and mild gaps. They are not the right call for small children, whose teeth are still growing and shifting. Severely rotated teeth or a real bite problem still belong in traditional braces, where the pressure is greater and the control over how the teeth move is stronger. Now and then the answer is not movement at all and veneers turn out to be the better option. Sorting that out starts with one short appointment: impressions, a bite registration and photos, half an hour at the outside. About a week later a computer simulation shows where every tooth lands before a single tray goes in. Dr. Stuart Curry graduated from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 2004, spent three years in the Air Force at MacDill focused on cosmetic work and implant restoration, and has been nominated for America's Best Dentist every year since 2007. Across Mountain Brook, Homewood and Vestavia Hills, aligners at Stuart Curry Dentistry suit adults who want the whole thing to go unnoticed and teenagers who would rather not spend homecoming season in brackets.

Cost is usually the last question, and here it has a real answer. Insurance tends to treat clear aligners the way it treats braces, and a case without coverage lands somewhere in the $3,500 to $5,000 range depending on complexity. The practice is in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and Delta Dental, still files with the carriers it is not in network with, and runs its own in office plan with no waiting period for people who carry no dental coverage at all. CareCredit handles longer timelines, three to eighteen months at no interest. The front desk verifies benefits before the first visit, so the estimate is a number rather than a guess, and the consultation itself is free. If the plan was always to start before January, when most dental benefits reset, this is the month the calendar stops being an excuse. The orthodontics team at Stuart Curry Dentistry takes consultation calls at (205) 972-3831, Monday through Thursday, plus the first and third Friday of each month.
