Superintendent Gives Update On Elementary Rezoning
Vestavia Hills Schools superintendent Charles Mason addressed elementary school rezoning related to the city's massive construction plan.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL - Vestavia Hills interim superintendent Charles Mason issued a statement updating the status of proposed elementary school rezoning as part of the system's massive construction plan and purchase of Gresham Elementary School from Jefferson County.
In December, the Vestavia Hills Board of Education adopted its comprehensive school restructuring plan that calls for the district to transition to three K-5 schools west of U.S. 280 in the fall of 2019.
"It had been the desire of the Board of Education to complete the elementary rezoning process during my term as Interim Superintendent," Mason said. It's clear now that is not going to be possible." Mason's term as interim superintendent ends March 14 when new superintendent Todd Freeman takes over. Mason said the construction plan must be approved by a federal court, and that approval is not yet complete.

"Our judgement is that it would be premature for us to engage in the establishment of attendance zones unless and until that approval has been given," Mason said. "However, other aspects of planning for the new elementary school will continue. August of 2019 continues to be the school system's goal for moving to the new structure of schools."
Mason said if Jefferson County's plan is approved, Freeman will determine when to proceed with the elementary rezoning process.

"The Board and I understand the importance of this issue and the interest it holds for many of you," Mason said. "Whenever the process moves forward, you can be assured that the process will include opportunities for the community to review possible options and give input to the superintendent and Board."
