Vestavia Working With Vendor To Fix Coyote Problem

The coyote problem in Vestavia is being addressed, as city officials are meeting with possible vendors to fix the issue.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL - City Manager Jeff Downes, Mayor Ashley Curry and Vestavia Hills Police Department Code Enforcement Official Corporal James Coleman met with the first of a handful vendors Friday to observe areas experiencing a high frequency of coyote sightings. After observing these areas, including terrain, and surroundings, the wildlife manager will provide a plan and a quote for the trapping and removal of a significant number of coyotes.

Citizens have asked about spreading bear scat or wolf urine in yards to repel coyotes. Downes posted a message on social media saying, "This was discussed with the wildlife manager and we were informed that bear scat often serves as a food source for coyotes. Wolf urine is also ineffective, as it actually attracts coyotes instead of repelling them."

While there are no known reports of attacks on humans in Alabama, Downes said the City of Vestavia Hills recognizes the fact that citizens are concerned about the frequency of coyote sightings, as well as the safety of family members and pets. "We are continuing to evaluate our options, including continued interviews with potential wildlife management companies and will update as warranted."
